What goes wrong when sourcing sucralose

Mostly made in China, with one US plant

Six of the seven makers listed here are in China. Kanbo says its Dongying plant has a capacity of 3,000 metric tons. Tate & Lyle calls itself the sole maker of SPLENDA Sucralose and says it produces it at McIntosh, Alabama. Several distributors resell Chinese product: Prinova's listing names Sunvision Sweet Co. of China as the manufacturer. Ask which plant made your lot.

Duties depend on the tariff code

The USITC tariff schedule lists sucralose under HTS 2932.14.00.00 with a 3.7% general duty. Section 301 duties on Chinese goods are set by HTS code, so confirm the current total rate with your customs broker.

A patent fight shaped the supply base

In 2007 Tate & Lyle filed a Section 337 complaint at the US International Trade Commission over sucralose, sweeteners containing it and related intermediates. In April 2009 the Commission issued a limited exclusion order against eleven respondents and ended the case. It found no violation on three of the patents. Ask any supplier about the status of its process and product in your market.

Liquid sucralose can carry preservatives

Niutang's liquid sucralose spec lists 24.5 to 25.5% assay with potassium sorbate and sodium benzoate at about 0.10 to 0.12% each. If your label is clean-label or preservative-free, check this before you choose liquid over powder.

The most common quality failures

  • Assay out of range. Niutang lists a powder assay of 98.0 to 102.0%, and Nutra Food Ingredients lists the same range. Write the assay range and method into the spec.
  • Residual methanol. Parchem's FCC listing caps methanol at 0.1%, and Nutra Food Ingredients lists below 0.15%. Suppliers differ, so set your own limit.
  • Heavy metals and lead. Parchem lists heavy metals at 10 mg/kg maximum, and Nutra Food Ingredients lists lead below 1 ppm. Ask for both on every certificate of analysis.
  • Microbes and particle size. Parchem lists yeast and mold below 50 CFU/g, Salmonella negative, and 100% through 60 mesh. Write the micro limits and the mesh into the spec.

What makes a sucralose supplier the best fit

There is no single best supplier. These are the criteria buyers use to pick the right one for their spec.

  1. Plant and country of manufacture. Know which plant made the sucralose, not just who sells it, and what duties apply to that country.
  2. Form and grade. Match powder, granular, micronized or liquid, and FCC, USP or pharmaceutical grade, to your process and label.
  3. Certificate of analysis. Get a CoA for every lot with assay, methanol, heavy metals, lead, loss on drying and micro results.
  4. Food safety certification. Look for a GFSI-benchmarked scheme (FSSC 22000, BRCGS or SQF) that covers the plant where it is made.
  5. Label and religious claims. Get kosher and halal certificates, and check for preservatives if you buy liquid.
  6. Pack size, minimums and backup. Match the pack and the minimum order to your line, get a lead time to your dock, and qualify a second source.

Sucralose supplier FAQ

Who are the best sucralose suppliers?

It depends on your spec. Buyers usually compare form and grade, country of manufacture, food safety certification and duty exposure. Waystation lists 20 suppliers with a dedicated sucralose page, including Kanbo International, Nutra Food Ingredients and Tate & Lyle (SPLENDA Sucralose).

Is sucralose made in the US?

Yes. Tate & Lyle says its McIntosh, Alabama plant produces SPLENDA Sucralose. The other six makers listed here are in China.

Is there organic sucralose?

Sucralose is made by chlorinating sucrose, so organic claims are rare. The table shows none stated for sucralose. If you need organic, ask for the certificate and the certifier.

What are typical lead times and minimum orders?

No supplier here states a lead time on its sucralose page. Minimums that are stated include 400 lb at Graham Chemical, 25 kg at Green Jeeva, 50 kg at Vivion and 1,000 kg at Xanero USA. Ask for time from order to your dock and whether the stock is in the US.

What should a sucralose certificate of analysis include?

Assay (98.0 to 102.0% is common), methanol, heavy metals, lead, loss on drying, residue on ignition, and microbiology: yeast and mold, Salmonella and E. coli, each against your spec.
