Sourcing risks
What goes wrong when sourcing ascorbic acid
Supply sits in a few Chinese provinces
CSPC says it has ranked first in vitamin C market share since 2005, and several of the makers listed here are in Hebei and Shandong. dsm-firmenich says its Dalry plant in Scotland is the only Western source. Distributors such as Ingredi and Prinova name Northeast Pharmaceutical of China as the maker, so ask which plant made your lot.
Duties and tariff changes
The US tariff schedule lists vitamin C and its derivatives (HTS 2936.27.00) at a general duty rate of Free. Tariff actions on Chinese goods change often, so confirm the rate for your entry date with your customs broker.
A price-fixing lawsuit shaped the market
US buyers sued Chinese vitamin C exporters in the 2000s for fixing prices. The Supreme Court ruled in 2018 on how courts weigh a foreign government's account of its law, and the Second Circuit dismissed the case in 2021 on international comity grounds. It is a reminder that a few producers set the market price.
Origin is not always stated
Listed distributors state the manufacturer or country in some cases, and not in others. Ask every supplier for the plant, country of origin and a current certificate of analysis before you qualify the lot.
The most common quality failures
- Discoloration and oxidation. Barentz says ascorbic acid discolors on exposure to air and moisture, and dsm-firmenich lists a 36 month stability period. Write color, shelf life, packaging and storage conditions into the spec
- Wrong grade or form. Makers list straight crystal at 99.0% to 100.5%, granulation at 96% to 98%, coated at 97%, and fine powder at 100 to 300 mesh. Name the assay range, form and mesh in the spec so the lot matches your line
- Non-GMO and label claims. Brenntag notes that most ascorbic acid is made with genetically modified microorganisms because it costs less. If your label says non-GMO, ask for an identity preserved or PCR statement like those Farbest lists for its grades
- Missing lot documentation. SDI says it supplies a COA by lot and Ingredi names the maker on its page. Require a COA with assay, loss on drying, heavy metals and microbiology for every lot, and a statement of the plant

What makes a ascorbic acid supplier the best fit
There is no single best supplier. These are the criteria buyers use to pick the right one for their spec.
- Grade and form. Match USP or FCC grade, crystal, fine powder, granular or coated form to your process, and write the assay range into the spec.
- Plant and country of origin. Know which plant made the lot and which country it ships from, not only who sells it.
- Certifications. Look for a GFSI scheme such as BRCGS or FSSC 22000 that covers the plant, plus kosher or halal certificates if your label needs them.
- Certificate of analysis. Get a CoA per lot with assay, loss on drying, heavy metals and micro results.
- Pack, stock and lead time. Match the 25 kg carton or bag to your line, check whether it ships from US stock and get lead time to your dock.
- Non-GMO and label statements. Get non-GMO, gluten and allergen statements if your label makes those claims, and qualify a second source.
Ascorbic acid supplier FAQ
Who are the best ascorbic acid suppliers?
It depends on your spec. Buyers usually compare grade and form, plant of origin, certifications and lead time. Waystation lists 15 suppliers with a dedicated ascorbic acid page, including dsm-firmenich, Farbest Brands and Zhejiang NHU.
Is ascorbic acid made in the US?
None of the listed suppliers states that it makes ascorbic acid in the US or Canada. The listed makers state production in China and Scotland, and several distributors keep US stock.
Is organic ascorbic acid available?
None of the suppliers here state an organic ascorbic acid. Ask whether a non-GMO, identity preserved or other label statement fits your claim instead.
What are the lead times?
None of the suppliers here state a lead time. Coresol USA, SDI Chemicals and Vivion say they hold US stock, which usually means shorter delivery than an import from China. Ask each for time from order to your dock.
What should I ask a supplier for?
Ask for grade (USP or FCC), assay range, form and mesh, plant and country of origin, a CoA per lot, non-GMO and allergen statements, kosher or halal certificates, pack size and shelf life.

Rate a supplierHow we built this list
Waystation started from its supplier discovery results and kept only suppliers whose own website has a page dedicated to ascorbic acid. Table entries are what each supplier states on its own site as of November 2026; "Not stated" means it doesn't say. Manufacturer means the supplier says it makes ascorbic acid, brand means it sells under its own consumer brand, distributor covers the rest. Listed alphabetically, no paid placement, not an endorsement. Corrections: info@waystationai.com.
