What goes wrong when sourcing Peruvian anchovy oil
Where the oil comes from
Peru was the largest supplier of fish oil to the US by value in 2024, with 33% of imports, and second in 2025 with 27%, behind Vietnam. Almost all Peruvian fish oil comes from one fishery, the anchoveta (Engraulis ringens). One bad season moves the price for every buyer.
El Niño and cancelled seasons
Peru set its 2026 first-season quota at 1.91 million tonnes, the lowest in a decade, then suspended fishing on May 27 with about a quarter of it landed. On October 16, 2026 the government said the second north-central season will not open: 79% of the fish were juveniles. The first 2023 season was cancelled too. Trade press put Peruvian fish oil near $6,800 a tonne in June 2026, up 172% in a year. Agree how price is set before you sign a yearly contract.
US tariffs
Peruvian fish oil enters the US duty-free under the US-Peru Trade Promotion Agreement if it meets the origin rules. Since July 24, 2026, a Section 301 tariff of 12.5% applies to most goods from Peru, and fish oil (HTSUS 1504.20) does not appear on the published exempt list. Confirm the rate with your customs broker before you price a contract.
Lead times
Ocean freight from Callao to Los Angeles takes about 14 to 19 days port to port, before customs and trucking; Gulf ports take longer. None of the 10 suppliers here say they ship from US stock. Ask for lead time from order to your dock.
The most common quality failures
- Oxidation. Fish oil goes rancid. The GOED and Codex limits are peroxide value 5 meq/kg, p-anisidine 20 and TOTOX 26. One crude spec on this list allows peroxide up to 7 and TOTOX up to 35, so a refined spec must say so. A 2023 study of 72 US fish oil products found TOTOX over the limit in 13% of unflavored and 68% of flavored ones; flavor can hide rancidity
- Dioxins, PCBs and heavy metals. EU limits for marine oils are 1.75 pg WHO-TEQ/g for dioxins, 6.0 pg/g for dioxins plus dioxin-like PCBs and 200 ng/g for six other PCBs. The FDA fish oil spec caps lead at 0.1 ppm and mercury at 0.5 ppm. PCBs also trigger California Prop 65 warnings. Ask for a test on every lot
- EPA and DHA swing. A study of 435 Peruvian crude anchovy oils found EPA from 10.5% to 24.3% and DHA from 4.9% to 15.9%, and both drop when the fish are spawning. Spec a minimum for EPA and for DHA, not just total omega-3
- Blending. "Anchovy oil" can arrive blended with sardine or other fish oils. Ask for a species and origin statement per lot; NMR testing can detect a blend at about 10%

What makes a Peruvian anchovy oil supplier the best fit
There is no single best supplier. These are the criteria buyers use to pick the right one for their spec.
- Crude or refined. Food and supplement use needs refined oil: neutralized, bleached and deodorized, often molecularly distilled. Most crude goes to fish feed. Know which grade you are quoting
- Catch season and plant. Peru manages the north-central and southern stocks with separate quotas. Get the season, zone and plant that made the oil in writing
- Oxidation limits. Get guaranteed maximums for peroxide value, p-anisidine, TOTOX and acid value, and a CoA for every lot that shows them
- EPA and DHA. Spec minimum EPA and DHA separately, and the form: natural triglyceride, ethyl ester or re-esterified
- Contaminants. Dioxins, PCBs, lead, mercury, cadmium and arsenic tested per lot against your market's limits
- Certificates. Look for FSSC 22000 or BRCGS at the refinery, MarinTrust or Friend of the Sea for sourcing, and kosher or halal if your label needs them. Peru's industrial anchoveta fishery is not MSC certified, so ask for a certificate number on any MSC claim
- Pack sizes and lead time. Match the pack (drums, IBC totes or flexitanks) to your line, and get a lead time from order to your dock
Peruvian anchovy oil supplier FAQ
Who are the best Peruvian anchovy oil suppliers?
It depends on your spec. Buyers usually compare crude or refined grade, EPA and DHA, oxidation limits and certifications. Waystation lists 10 suppliers with a dedicated Peruvian anchoveta fish oil page, including Austral Group, Pesquera Diamante and Jedwards International.
Is anchoveta the same as anchovy?
Yes. Anchoveta and Peruvian anchovy are the same fish, Engraulis ringens. FDA's Seafood List gives "anchovy" as the market name and "anchoveta" as a vernacular name, so US labels should say anchovy.
Is Peruvian anchovy oil MSC certified?
Peru's industrial anchoveta fishery is not MSC certified as of November 2026. Some producers state other sourcing certificates: Austral Group states MarinTrust, and Pesquera Exalmar and Pesquera Centinela state MarinTrust and Friend of the Sea.
Are there US tariffs on Peruvian fish oil?
Normal duty is zero under the US-Peru trade agreement if origin rules are met. Since July 24, 2026 a 12.5% Section 301 tariff applies to most goods from Peru, and fish oil (HTSUS 1504.20) does not appear on the published exempt list. Confirm with your customs broker.
What should a fish oil certificate of analysis include?
Peroxide value, p-anisidine, TOTOX, acid value or free fatty acids, EPA and DHA, dioxins and PCBs, heavy metals (lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic) and moisture, each against your spec.

Rate a supplierHow we built this list
Waystation started from its supplier discovery results and kept only suppliers whose own website has a fish oil page that names Peruvian anchovy (anchoveta) or comes from a Peruvian producer, since Peru's fish oil comes from the anchoveta fishery. Table entries are what each supplier states on its own site as of October 2026; "Not stated" means it doesn't say. Manufacturer means the supplier says it produces or refines the oil, brand means it sells under its own consumer brand, distributor covers the rest. Listed alphabetically, no paid placement, not an endorsement. Corrections: info@waystationai.com.
