Sourcing risks

What goes wrong when sourcing collagen peptides

Bovine supply follows a small US herd

USDA counted 86.2 million cattle and calves on January 1, 2026, with 27.6 million beef cows, down 1%, and a 2025 calf crop of 32.9 million, down 2%. Drovers calls it the smallest total herd since 1951. Bovine hides are a main raw material for bovine collagen peptides, so ask suppliers how they secure hide supply and whether they will fix price for a year.

Drinks are pulling on demand

Vital Proteins launched a collagen sparkling water with Verisol peptides in spring 2026, and Pretty Tasty's collagen iced tea reached Target stores nationwide in September 2026. More beverage launches mean more buyers asking for clear, cold-soluble, neutral-tasting grades, so lead times on those grades can tighten.

Much of the supply is made outside the US

Rousselot says its Peptan collagen peptides come from four plants in Brazil, Belgium and France. Bioriginal says PeptPure is made in Brazil from grass-fed cow hides. PB Leiner lists production units in the US, Brazil, Argentina, China and Germany. Distributors often resell these plants, so ask which plant made your lot.

Source decides your label and allergen file

FDA lists fish as one of nine major food allergens, and labels must name the species. Marine and fish collagen from suppliers such as Stauber, Vinh Wellness and Prinova needs a fish allergen statement. Bovine and porcine sources avoid that, but halal and kosher claims then depend on certificates, which only some suppliers state.

Duty depends on how the product is classified

Protein substances under HTS 3504.00.50 carry a 4% general duty, free for partners under some trade agreements. Ask your customs broker which tariff line your collagen peptide enters under and what its country of origin is before you compare landed cost.

The most common quality failures

  • Wrong molecular weight. Peptide size changes solubility, taste and function. Pioneer Jellice says hydrolysis takes collagen from 30,000 to 200,000 Da down to 2,000 to 10,000 Da, and Vinh Wellness sells grades from 500 to 4,000 Da. Write your Da range and test method into the spec.
  • Gelling or cloudy drinks. Collagen peptides should not gel. Pioneer Jellice says its peptide does not gel at low temperature. Specify cold-water solubility and clarity at your drink's pH and test a pilot batch before you sign.
  • Source or allergen mix-up. Bovine, porcine and fish collagen are not interchangeable on a label. ATNUTRA flags fish allergen on its marine grade and BSE and TSE documents on its bovine grade. Get a written source statement for each lot.
  • Low protein or dirty lots. Suppliers state protein as at least 90% on a dry basis (BulkSupplements.com) or over 90% (Pioneer Jellice). Require protein on a dry basis, heavy metals, and microbiology on every certificate of analysis.

What makes a collagen peptides supplier the best fit

There is no single best supplier. These are the criteria buyers use to pick the right one for their spec.

  1. Source and plant. Know whether the peptide is bovine, porcine or marine and which plant and country made it.
  2. Molecular weight and grade. Get the Da range, the test method and a grade that fits your drink, bar or capsule.
  3. Solubility and taste. Test cold-water solubility, clarity and odor in your own formula before you commit.
  4. Certifications. Look for FSSC 22000, SQF or BRCGS that covers the plant, plus halal or kosher certificates if your label needs them.
  5. Certificate of analysis. Get a CoA for every lot with protein, moisture, heavy metals and microbiology results.
  6. Supply, pack and backup. Match the pack to your line, get lead time to your dock, and qualify a second source because hide supply is tight.

Collagen peptides supplier FAQ

Who are the best collagen peptides suppliers?

It depends on your spec. Buyers usually compare source, molecular weight, certifications and the country of manufacture. Waystation lists 20 suppliers with a dedicated collagen peptides page, including GELITA, PB Leiner and Rousselot.

Is collagen peptides made in the US?

Some is. BioCell Technology says BioCell Collagen is made in the USA and Germany, Connoils says its collagen is USA made, and JellyCo USA says its jellyfish collagen is harvested and processed in the US. Many other listed suppliers make it in Europe, Brazil, India, China or Vietnam.

Is organic collagen peptides available?

Rarely. Of the suppliers listed here, only Bioriginal states an organic certification for its PeptPure collagen peptides. Ask for the certificate and the certifying body.

What are typical lead times for collagen peptides?

None of the listed suppliers publishes a lead time. Ask for order-to-dock time by grade and plant, and ask whether stock sits in the US. Collagensei and Connoils say they hold stock in the US.

What should I ask a collagen peptides supplier for?

Source animal or fish species, molecular weight range and method, protein on a dry basis, a certificate of analysis, allergen and halal or kosher certificates, the plant that makes it, and a food safety certificate that covers that plant.

How we built this list

Waystation started from its supplier discovery results and kept only suppliers whose own website has a page dedicated to collagen peptides. Table entries are what each supplier states on its own site as of November 2026; "Not stated" means it doesn't say. Manufacturer means the supplier says it makes collagen peptides, brand means it sells under its own consumer brand, distributor covers the rest. Listed alphabetically, no paid placement, not an endorsement. Corrections: info@waystationai.com.
