What goes wrong when sourcing creatine monohydrate
Demand is growing faster than most categories
SPINS data shows creatine sales in the mainstream performance category up 71.9% in the 52 weeks ending November 30, 2025, after 46.5% growth in the year to October 6, 2024. New formats are driving it: US and Canadian creatine gummy products grew 59% from January 2025 to January 2026. Buyers who forecast flat volume can find supply allocated.
Supply sits with a few German and Chinese plants
Alzchem makes Creapure and Creavitalis in Germany and says it saw strong demand for both in 2025. It finished a creatine capacity expansion in the third quarter of 2025 and approved a further program of about EUR 120 million, with gradual commissioning planned from the second half of 2027. Three listed manufacturers (Caloong, Hengkang and HSF Biotech) state locations in China, and one distributor's page gives China as the origin. Ask every distributor which plant made your lot.
Gummies and drinks break creatine down
Glanbia says standard creatine monohydrate lacks stability in water, and its own 12-month studies of CreaBev found 30% of the creatine intact at pH 2.8, 42% in cold-fill at pH 4.5 and 73% under UHT at pH 7.0. In a March 2024 NOW test, half of 12 creatine gummies failed to meet label claims. Gummies cost nearly three times as much per gram of creatine as powder. Only 2% of creatine gummies use a branded ingredient, against 26% of creatine powders.
Check duties by classification, not by old news
The US antidumping order on creatine monohydrate from China was issued in February 2000 and revoked effective February 4, 2005 because no domestic party took part in the sunset review. We did not find a current creatine-specific order, but duties depend on the tariff classification and any broader China duties in force on your entry date. Confirm landed cost with your customs broker.
It is synthetic, so organic is off the table, and brands carry a premium
Source86 says creatine monohydrate is made by chemical synthesis from sodium sarcosinate and cyanamide, suits vegan formulas, and is not eligible for organic certification. Alzchem sells Creapure under a trademark license and says plainly that the quality comes at a price. If your label needs a named brand or the Cologne List for sport, price it as a separate line from commodity powder.
The most common quality failures
- Under-dosed or degraded finished product. Creatine breaks down to creatinine in water, heat and acid, so a label claim can fail even when the raw material was good. Write the creatine assay and a creatinine limit into the spec for the finished lot, and test it at the end of shelf life
- Impurity limits that differ by supplier. Listed suppliers state different limits: HSF Biotech creatinine up to 50 ppm, dicyandiamide up to 5 ppm and dihydrotriazine up to 0.1%; Foodchem dicyandiamide up to 20 ppm; Source86 creatinine up to 100 mg/kg and dicyandiamide up to 50 mg/kg. Put your own limits in the spec and require them on every certificate of analysis
- Wrong mesh for the process. Suppliers sell 20 mesh, 80 mesh and 200 mesh, and HSF states at least 70% through 200 mesh. Confirm flow and dissolving in your own line before you lock a mesh. State the mesh and a particle size test method in the spec
- Moisture and shelf life. Creatine monohydrate holds bound water, so loss on drying is never zero: Source86 states up to 12.0% and Foodchem up to 11.5%. Sellers give 24 to 36 months in sealed packs. Spec the loss on drying range, the pack liner and a storage condition

What makes a creatine monohydrate supplier the best fit
There is no single best supplier. These are the criteria buyers use to pick the right one for their spec.
- Mesh and grade. Match the mesh (80, 200 or micronized) and the grade (food, supplement or branded) to your product format.
- Impurity limits. Get written limits for creatinine, dicyandiamide and dihydrotriazine, and a certificate of analysis for every lot.
- Plant and country of manufacture. Know which plant made the lot, not only who sells it, and what duties apply to that country.
- Food safety certification. Look for a GFSI-benchmarked scheme such as FSSC 22000 that covers the plant where the creatine is made.
- Format fit and stability data. If you make gummies or drinks, ask for stability data in your pH and heat process, not only powder specs.
- Pack size, lead time and backup. Match the pack to your line, get a lead time to your dock, and qualify a second source.
Creatine monohydrate supplier FAQ
Who are the best creatine monohydrate suppliers?
It depends on your spec. Buyers usually compare mesh and grade, impurity limits, food safety certification and where the creatine is made. Waystation lists 19 suppliers with a dedicated creatine monohydrate page, including Alzchem Group (Creapure, Creavitalis), Glanbia Nutritionals (CreaBev) and Prinova Group.
Is creatine monohydrate made in the US?
None of the supplier pages listed here states that its creatine is made in the US or Canada. Alzchem says Creapure and Creavitalis are made in Germany, Prinova's page gives China as the origin, and Medikonda's page gives India.
Is there organic creatine monohydrate?
No listed supplier states organic creatine. Source86 explains that creatine monohydrate is made by chemical synthesis and is not eligible for organic certification. It does suit vegan formulas, and Alzchem says Creavitalis contains no animal-based raw materials.
What are typical lead times for creatine monohydrate?
Few suppliers state them. Caloong says 7 to 15 days for 10 to 50 ton orders and Vivion states a current lead time of 2 weeks. Foodchem says stocked items leave its Shanghai warehouse within 1 week of a confirmed order. Ask for a lead time to your dock and a backup source.
What should I ask a creatine monohydrate supplier for?
Ask for the mesh and particle size method, a certificate of analysis showing assay, creatinine, dicyandiamide, dihydrotriazine and loss on drying, the plant and country of manufacture, a GFSI certificate for that plant, and the shelf life in your pack.

Waystation started from its supplier discovery results and kept only suppliers whose own website has a page dedicated to creatine monohydrate. Table entries are what each supplier states on its own site as of November 2026; "Not stated" means it doesn't say. Manufacturer means the supplier says it makes creatine monohydrate, brand means it sells under its own consumer brand, distributor covers the rest. Listed alphabetically, no paid placement, not an endorsement. Corrections: info@waystationai.com.
