Sourcing risks

What goes wrong when sourcing citric acid

A few big producers, and China leads

Large Chinese fermenters such as RZBC and Shandong TTCA, both in Shandong, are among the makers listed here. In the US, ADM says its citric acid is made in Southport, North Carolina, and FBC Industries makes liquid citric acid in Rochelle, Illinois. Distributors often resell a few plants, so ask which plant made your lot.

US duties on Chinese citric acid

Antidumping and countervailing orders cover citric acid, sodium citrate and potassium citrate from China, dry or in solution. After a sunset review the USITC voted on May 21, 2026 that revoking them would likely bring back injury, and Commerce continued both orders effective May 26, 2026. Rates differ by producer, so ask every importer which producer and rate applies to your shipment.

Landed cost differs by region

Imported lots carry duty and freight on top of the plant price and add transit time to your lead time. Compare quotes on a landed basis and keep safety stock.

The most common quality failures

  • Wrong form: anhydrous or monohydrate. Monohydrate carries one water molecule per molecule of citric acid, so it holds less acid per kg than anhydrous. Write the form into the spec and the assay basis so a lot is not swapped.
  • Wrong grade or compendium. Suppliers cite different standards, such as USP, FCC, Ph. Eur. and JP. Name the one your product needs and ask for a certificate of analysis against it on every lot.
  • Technical grade sold as food grade. Some distributors sell food grade and technical grade citric acid as separate products. Require FCC food grade, in writing, on the quote, the label and the CoA.
  • Granulation and dissolving problems. Fine, medium and standard granulations dissolve and blend differently, and anhydrous is recommended for dry blends. Specify the mesh or granulation and the test method for your mixer or process.

What makes a citric acid supplier the best fit

There is no single best supplier. These are the criteria buyers use to pick the right one for their spec.

  1. Grade and form. Match anhydrous, monohydrate or 50% solution, and FCC or USP grade, to what your plant and label need.
  2. Plant and country of manufacture. Know which plant made the lot and what duties apply to that country.
  3. Landed cost. Compare quotes with duty, freight and pack size included, not the ex-works price.
  4. Certificate of analysis. Get a CoA for every lot against the standard you name, plus allergen and GMO statements.
  5. Food safety certification. Look for a GFSI-benchmarked scheme such as FSSC 22000 that covers the plant making the acid.
  6. Pack size and lead time. Confirm bag, tote or tank-truck sizes, minimum order and stated lead time before you commit.

Citric acid supplier FAQ

Who are the best citric acid suppliers?

It depends on your spec. Buyers usually compare grade and form, country of manufacture, duty exposure and food safety certification. Waystation lists 16 suppliers with a dedicated citric acid page, including ADM, Gadot Biochemical Industries and Jungbunzlauer.

Is citric acid made in the US?

Yes. ADM says its citric acid is made in Southport, North Carolina, and FBC Industries says it makes liquid citric acid in Rochelle, Illinois and Spencer, Wisconsin. Prinova lists a US country of origin for one anhydrous grade. Jungbunzlauer bought an Illinois site in 2025 but has not given a production date.

Is there a tariff on citric acid from China?

Yes. US antidumping and countervailing duty orders on Chinese citric acid were continued effective May 26, 2026. Rates differ by producer, so check the rate for your exact producer with your customs broker.

Is organic citric acid available?

None of the suppliers listed here state an organic certification for citric acid on their own pages. If your label needs organic, ask for the certificate before you quote.

What should I ask for when I request a quote?

Ask for the form (anhydrous, monohydrate or solution), grade (FCC or USP), granulation, producing plant and country, pack size, minimum order, lead time and a lot CoA. Few of these suppliers publish lead times, so ask for them in writing.

How we built this list

Waystation started from its supplier discovery results and kept only suppliers whose own website has a page dedicated to citric acid. Table entries are what each supplier states on its own site as of November 2026; "Not stated" means it doesn't say. Manufacturer means the supplier says it makes citric acid, brand means it sells under its own consumer brand, distributor covers the rest. Listed alphabetically, no paid placement, not an endorsement. Corrections: info@waystationai.com.
