What goes wrong when sourcing pea protein

US duties on pea protein from China

Commerce set final antidumping rates of 122.19% (111.65% cash deposit after subsidy offsets) for named Chinese exporters including Yantai Shuangta and Shandong Jianyuan, and 280.31% (269.77% deposit) for the China-wide entity. Countervailing rates run from 15.15% to 16.52% for cooperating firms, 15.84% for all others and 355.89% for Shandong Jianyuan, Focusherb, Golden Protein and Yantai Wanpy. The orders were scheduled to issue August 19, 2024. Ask any supplier quoting China-origin pea protein who is the importer of record and what deposit rate applies.

Canada has its own duties

Canada's border agency found dumping and subsidy on high-protein pea protein from China: at least 65% protein on a dry basis, textured pea protein excluded. Exporters without a specific rate pay an anti-dumping duty of 24.9% of export price and a countervailing duty of 5.84 CNY per kg. The final determination was October 21, 2024 and the tribunal's finding followed on November 19, 2024. A Canadian buyer should check the protein level and form on the quote against that definition.

Fewer peas in the Canadian field

Statistics Canada's June 30, 2026 report put dry pea area at 3.0 million acres, down 13.7% from 2025 and the lowest since 2011. Saskatchewan fell 7.3% to 1.6 million acres and Alberta fell 17.6% to 1.2 million. Several suppliers on this page, including NutriPea and Norben, state Canadian yellow peas. Ask how much of next year's crop is contracted and whether they can name a second source of peas.

China reopened to Canadian peas

Pulse Canada said on January 16, 2026 that China would remove its 100% tariff on Canadian peas from March 1, 2026. That reopens an export outlet for the same crop that feeds North American pea protein plants. Ask suppliers whether pea cost is fixed in the quote or can move with the raw pea market.

Where the peas grow and where the protein is made can differ

Supplier pages in this list state different splits: Global Resources Direct says peas grown in the US and Canada are further processed in China, Guzen Development says its organic pea protein comes from India, and Green Jeeva's page names Canada, the USA, China and India. Duty exposure, organic paperwork and lead times follow the country of manufacture, so put both countries on the spec. For price reference, Foodcom's site showed an indicative 3,280 EUR per metric ton EXW Central Europe for 80% pea protein on November 5, 2026, subject to confirmation.

The most common quality failures

  • Heavy metals in the protein. PURIS says all plants absorb trace metals such as lead and cadmium from soil, and that it tests each pea harvest and each finished batch for lead, cadmium, arsenic and mercury. It reports lead as low as 0.008 ppm in its best programs against California's 0.025 ppm Prop 65 benchmark. Write a maximum for each of the four metals into the spec and require a certificate of analysis with every lot.
  • Protein level stated on the wrong basis. Listed grades run from 55% concentrates (Vestkorn, AGT Pea Protein 55) to 80 to 85% isolates, and Canada's duty definition starts at 65%. Foodcom's spec shows the basis to demand: 80.0% protein by N x 6.25 on a dry basis, moisture max 10.0% and ash max 8.0%. Specify protein on a dry basis with the nitrogen factor, plus moisture and ash limits.
  • Soy and gluten cross-contact. Several suppliers here market pea protein as soy-free or gluten-free, so carry-over matters. Foodcom's spec caps soya at 25 ppm and gluten at 20 ppm. Put allergen limits in the spec, ask the plant whether soy or wheat runs on the same lines, and require the test to be named on the certificate.
  • Microbial limits and taste left open. Foodcom's spec sets total plate count at 30,000 cfu/g maximum, coliforms at 100 cfu/g maximum, Salmonella absent in 25 g and a 24 month storage period. Guzen, Scoular and Shuangta describe a neutral taste, but Foodcom's published spec has no sensory limit. Write micro limits and a shelf-life date into the spec, and agree a reference sample for taste and color.

What makes a pea protein supplier the best fit

There is no single best supplier. These are the criteria buyers use to pick the right one for their spec.

  1. Protein level and form. Match isolate, concentrate, textured or hydrolyzed to the product, and state protein on a dry basis with the nitrogen factor.
  2. Where peas are grown and protein is made. Get both countries in writing, because duties, organic paperwork and supply risk follow them.
  3. Certificate of analysis per lot. Every lot should show protein, moisture, ash, heavy metals, allergens and micro against your written limits.
  4. Food safety certification. Ask for the current SQF, BRCGS, FSSC 22000 or ISO 22000 certificate for the plant that ships your lot, not the parent company.
  5. Pack size and minimum order. Listed minimums run from a single 25 kg bag to 1 MT, so check that the pack and the minimum fit your run.
  6. Price basis and stock. Ask for the incoterm, the protein level the price assumes and whether the lot sits in a US or Canadian warehouse or ships from abroad.

Pea protein supplier FAQ

Who are the best pea protein suppliers?

It depends on your spec. Buyers usually compare protein level and form, where the peas are grown and processed, food safety certification and pack size. Waystation lists 35 suppliers with a dedicated pea protein page, including ADM, Ingredion and PURIS.

Is pea protein made in the US?

Some of it. Seven suppliers on this page state it is made or grown in the US or Canada: ADM, AGT Food and Ingredients, Ingredion, Norben Company, NutriPea, Prinova and PURIS. Others say they import, and some list China or India as the place of manufacture, so confirm the country of manufacture on the spec.

Is organic pea protein available?

Yes. 16 of the 35 listed suppliers state organic pea protein, including Ingredion, PURIS and Guzen Development. Ask for the current organic certificate and the country where the peas were grown.

What are the lead times for pea protein?

Most supplier pages do not state lead times. Foodcom lists its pea protein as in stock with a 1 MT minimum order. Ask each supplier whether your lot is held in a US or Canadian warehouse or made to order, and how much of the crop behind it is already contracted.

What should I ask a pea protein supplier for?

Ask for a spec sheet with protein on a dry basis, moisture, ash, heavy metals, allergens and micro limits, a certificate of analysis for each lot, the plant's food safety certificate, the country where the peas were grown and where the protein is made, and the pack size and minimum order.

How we built this list

Waystation started from its supplier discovery results and kept only suppliers whose own website has a page dedicated to pea protein. Table entries are what each supplier states on its own site as of November 2026; "Not stated" means it doesn't say. Manufacturer means the supplier says it makes pea protein, brand means it sells under its own consumer brand, distributor covers the rest. Listed alphabetically, no paid placement, not an endorsement. Corrections: info@waystationai.com.
