What goes wrong when sourcing natural yellow and orange color
FDA's dye phase-out is pulling demand
FDA's April 22, 2025 plan named FD&C Yellow No. 5 and Yellow No. 6 among six synthetic dyes to remove from food. The 2025 release said by the end of next year, which was 2026. FDA's industry pledge tracker, dated October 16, 2026, now lists the target as the end of 2027 and shows 12 of 32 pledges complete and 20 in progress. FDA has also finalized the revocation of Orange B. Expect tight sampling and lead times as reformulations land.
Natural still needs an approved listing
FDA's February 5, 2026 letter says any color derived from natural sources must still be pre-approved through the color additive petition process. Annatto, paprika oleoresin, turmeric and beta-carotene are listed color additives exempt from batch certification. Beta-carotene may be synthetic or from natural sources under 21 CFR 73.95, so get a written source statement before you print a natural claim.
Duties on Indian paprika oleoresin
Commerce published a preliminary antidumping finding on oleoresin paprika from India on April 2, 2026, with cash deposits on entries from that date. Ask where the paprika in your color was grown and what duty applies.
Annatto is a short supply chain
Annatto color starts as seed from the Bixa orellana tree. Biocon says it has production in Lima, Peru, and Imbarex says it sources seed from certified Peruvian farms. Ask each supplier where its seed was grown and processed, and qualify a second source before a color change reaches the shelf.
Lead in turmeric
A Stanford-led study in Science of the Total Environment (2024) tested 356 turmeric samples from 23 cities in India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Nepal. About 14% had lead above 2 ug/g, and the highest samples fit lead chromate, a yellow pigment added to turmeric. Require lead and arsenic results on every lot of turmeric and curcumin color.
The most common quality failures
- Wrong form for your system. Bixin is fat-soluble and insoluble in water. Norbixin is the water-soluble form made by saponification. Write the carrier, solubility, and bixin or norbixin content into the spec
- Ringing and sediment in beverages. Beta-carotene can form a ring at the bottle neck and settle over shelf life. Ask for a ringing-free emulsion and run a clear-bottle shelf-life test
- Shade drift with pH and light. One supplier lists annatto extract as stable from pH 5.0 to 10.0 and beta-carotene from pH 2.5 to 10.0, and offers a light-stable turmeric version. Give each supplier your pH, light exposure and shelf life
- Solvent residues and heavy metals. FDA limits annatto extract to 10 ppm lead and 3 ppm arsenic, and sets residual solvent limits for annatto and paprika oleoresin at the spice oleoresin limits. Ask for lead, arsenic and solvent results on the certificate of analysis

What makes a natural yellow and orange color supplier the best fit
There is no single best supplier. These are the criteria buyers use to pick the right one for their spec.
- Source and form. Match the pigment (annatto, turmeric, paprika, beta-carotene or carrot) and its form to your product's fat, water and pH
- Color strength and shade. Get a color value or pigment percentage, a target shade, and a tolerance you can test lot to lot
- Stability in your product. Ask for heat, light and pH data in a product like yours, and run your own shelf-life test
- Certifications. Look for a GFSI-benchmarked scheme such as FSSC 22000, BRCGS or SQF, plus organic, kosher and halal certificates if your label needs them
- Regulatory and label fit. Confirm the color is a listed US color additive, check the label wording (annatto must be declared as derived from annatto seed) and get a natural-source statement
- Pack size, lead time and backup. Match the pack to your line, get lead time from order to your dock, and qualify a second source
Natural yellow and orange color supplier FAQ
Who are the best natural yellow and orange color suppliers?
It depends on your spec. Buyers usually compare source and format, stability in their product, certifications and duty exposure. Waystation lists 19 suppliers with a dedicated natural yellow and orange color page, including Brothers International Food Corp, FoodRGB and Oterra.
Is natural yellow and orange color made in the US?
Some of it. Nelson-Jameson lists the Givaudan annatto color it sells as US origin, and Lycored lists production in Branchburg, New Jersey. Other listed makers state plants in Peru, Taiwan, India or Europe, and several do not say. Ask which plant made your lot.
Is organic natural yellow and orange color available?
Yes from some. Brothers International says its juice and concentrate colors can be supplied as USDA Organic, Oterra says it is organic accredited in the US and EU, and Pocantico lists organic and organic-compliant lines. Organic compliant is not the same as certified, so ask for the certificate.
What are the lead times for natural yellow and orange color?
No supplier here states a lead time on its color page. Annatto, turmeric, paprika and carrot are farm crops, so ask for the time from order to your dock, whether the current lot is in stock, and qualify a second source.
What should I ask for when buying natural yellow and orange color?
The pigment source and form, color strength, a stability test in your product, lead and arsenic results, residual solvents for annatto and paprika oleoresin, a written natural-source statement for beta-carotene, and certificates for organic, kosher or halal if you claim them.

Waystation started from its supplier discovery results and kept only suppliers whose own website has a page dedicated to natural yellow and orange color. Table entries are what each supplier states on its own site as of November 2026; "Not stated" means it doesn't say. Manufacturer means the supplier says it makes natural yellow and orange color, brand means it sells under its own consumer brand, distributor covers the rest.
